Are you looking up a meeting time on your calendar or trying to find where you’re meeting a friend for coffee? I used to write this down in my home calendar or just remember that there was a Caribou Coffee near my work, but this usually happens when I’m on the road and don’t have access to my computer. So, I pull out my trusty cellphone and look everything up.

However, when I look at my phone screen, it’s overheated, or the app keeps crashing or freezing! Usually, I just turn the phone off and on again, but this may not solve the problem.

Here are 11 common issues and solutions for everyday phone problems.

1. Slow Phone

Problem: Most of the time, a slow phone is an older model phone, but this can occasionally happen with newer phones as well.

This usually happens when the phone’s Random-Access Memory (RAM) is clogged or jam-packed with unused apps and files, slowing the phone’s performance. Think of a 5:00 traffic jam.

Solution: Clean up the phone by closing or deleting apps and files. You can also clear your cache.

Say you just downloaded an app, and the phone starts running slower. Try uninstalling the app and see if the phone operates better.

Still not doing the trick? Try saving all your important information in cloud services like Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud, or e-mail it to yourself and save it on your computer. Every few weeks, I always back up all the pictures from my phone to my computer.

After this, restore your phone to factory data. You can always contact Integrity Device Repair, and we would love to help you with this!

2. Short Battery Life

Problem: You left home, and your battery life was at 98%. After several hours, you look down at your screen and see that the battery is at 67%! You haven’t even turned it on! Several factors affect battery life; you should consider them before replacing a battery.

Solution: First, try adjusting the screen’s brightness and turning off location services (like Google Maps or Life360), as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if they’re not in use.

Every phone also has a “Battery Saving Mode” that helps extend the battery life. You can check the “Battery Usage” in the phone’s “Settings” to see which apps use more battery.

Similar to the “slow phone” issue, you can also close down or disable all apps that drain the battery if they’re not usually in use.

3. Overheating Phone

Problem: When I ride my bike, I love to listen to podcasts or music. I keep my phone in a water-resistant mount on my top tube. After several hours of riding in the hot sun, my phone can overheat.

An overheating phone can be associated with battery life, charger, and phone placement.

Is your phone constantly in direct sunlight or in a hot area?

Is it in the shade or exposed to the elements?

If your phone is constantly overheating, get it fixed ASAP, because the battery and screen can be critically damaged as a result.

Solution: See the solution under “Bad Battery Life” to make sure this is a battery issue or not. Still overheating? Relocate the phone to a cooler place out of direct sunlight. Then give it a few minutes to cool down.

4. Lack of Storage Space

Problem: If you’re like me, you take way too many pictures of your kid’s activities or awkward selfies when you think the camera is facing out. Maybe you save songs or documents on your phone that you looked at six months ago and haven’t gotten around to erasing them.

Did you download a game or social media app that you never use? When your phone is nearly full of storage, it can also slow things down.

Solution: The solution is basically the same as for the slow phone issue. Delete files, texts, and apps that you don’t use or need. Clean up the cache data. Transfer files you want to keep to an online cloud service or to your computer. The fewer files I have in storage on my phone, the better.

5. Apps Crashing

Problem: I’m in the middle of taking out the boss pig on Angry Birds 2, and the app crashes! What the heck? It took me 235 tries and 125 coins to get here! This equates to being next in line for a roller coaster ride I’ve waited 2 hours for, only to be asked to go to the back! Although this is frustrating to no end, the solution isn’t that hard.

Often, this is not your fault but the app itself. Sometimes they have bugs, or there’s an issue with an operating system update. Apps frequently add new options and refine certain details to improve performance. However, sometimes your poor phone can’t support the latest version, and the darn app crashes constantly.

Solution: Try restarting your phone and reopening the app. You can also go to your phone’s settings and “force stop” the app. Cleaning up the cache data is also helpful. I like to keep only the apps I’m currently using open. Still not working? Uninstall and reinstall the app. Maybe the app just had a few bugs, and you needed the latest version.

6. Phone Freezing

Problem: Phone freezing can happen if your phone is an older model or if the storage space is full. Sometimes, just restarting the phone can do the trick, or turning it off and back on. Just like the TV show The IT Crowd says, “Have you tried turning off and on again?”

In the olden days (pre-smartphone era), you could also take the battery out and put it back in. However, with most modern phones, all batteries are internal, and you need a professional to do it. But let not your heart be troubled, there is a solution!

Solution: Depending on the phone, here are the steps to restart:

Apple (iOS8 or higher):

Click “Volume Up” once

Click “Volume Down” once

Hold the “Power Key” for 15 seconds

Apple (iOS7 or lower)

Press the “Power Key” + “Volume Down Key” at the same time for 10 seconds or until the “Apple Logo” appears

Samsung

Press the “Power Key” + “Volume Down Key” at the same time for 15 seconds or until the “Samsung Logo” appears

Sony

Press the “Power Key” + “Volume Up Key” at the same time for 10 seconds

When the phone vibrates, press the “Power Key” to turn the phone on

Nokia/HMD

Press the “Power Key” + “Volume Up Key” at the same time for 15 seconds or until the “Android Logo” appears

Still having phone issues? Contact Integrity Device Repair, and we’ll go through it together!

7. Apps Not Downloading

Problem: Do you need to download an app for school or work? Are you looking for a way to pass the time while you commute on the bus or light-rail, but the darn app just won’t download? This can happen frequently, but have no fear! The solution is just a few steps away!

Solution: Just like in many other solutions, clean the app cache. If you use Google, try cleaning the Google Play and Google Play Services history. Always restart the phone after this and download the app again. Remember, Integrity Device Repair is always here to assist you in doing this!

8. MicroSD Not Working

Problem: Sometimes your phone is full of files you want to keep, or you’re just too busy to transfer them, so you store them on a microSD card you bought from Best Buy back in 2011.

The problem is that every time you try to save the files, your device informs you that it no longer accepts or supports the microSD card.

Solution: Your old microSD card may have errors, and your phone isn’t recognizing it. Try connecting the card to your computer and reformatting it at least twice.

Restart the phone, insert the SD card, and try again. If you’re still getting an error message, you may have to just get a new microSD card.

9. Wet Cell Phone

Problem: It was a beautiful, sunny day in the Bahamas (not the problem, but keep reading!). I had been working on my tan for about 15 minutes and wanted to cool off in the pool. After entering the shallow end, I realized I had left my phone in my pocket! Panic set in as I quickly took it out and realized it was too late! Don’t feel bad when/if this happens, though. The solution is easier than you think!

Solution: DO NOT TURN THE PHONE ON!!! This is one of the worst things you can do!

If you can, remove the battery and put your phone in a bowl of rice. In the meantime, this will help absorb all the water.

Don’t have any rice? Try oatmeal. Just dry the phone off as much as possible and call Integrity Device Repair! We will take things from there!

10. Damaged Charging Port

Problem: Nothing lasts forever like the pizza you’ve had in your fridge for the past 2 weeks, or that vacation you just had, or your phone’s charging port.

Is your phone telling you it can’t connect to a charging cable? Sometimes it’s an issue with the cord, but other times it’s the phone’s charging port. Charging ports are prone to deterioration over time and use.

Just think of how many times a day you use it. Sometimes, it can be mishandled or get dirty, too. If the issue is with the charging port, it needs to be fixed by an expert. You can also troubleshoot a few things yourself.

Solution: Clean the charging port with a new, clean, and dry toothbrush. You may also try cleaning it with a dry Q-tip to remove any dust or debris that may be blocking the port and preventing the charge from completing.

If this still doesn’t work, it’s time to contact Integrity Device Repair. We’ll troubleshoot with you over the phone or come to you to personally check your charging port for any further issues!

11. Phone Won’t Turn On or Boot Up

Problem: The other day, I went to turn my phone on, but got nothing. Just a blank, black screen.

If this happens to you, there may be a problem with your phone’s hardware or software components. Sometimes software corruption is caused by malware attacks or virus infections.

Your firmware may also be corrupted because of improper flashing procedures. Maybe your hardware components, such as RAM chips, hard drives, processors, or other internal parts, are impaired.

Solution: Charge your phone using a different adapter and cable.

Still not working? Hold the “Power Button” for 10 seconds, and the screen should come on. Try this several more times.

Try the solutions in the “Phone Freezing” section. The final option would, of course, be to contact Integrity Device Repair, and we’ll troubleshoot things from there. You’re catching on!

Are Your Phone Problems Fixed?

Of course, there may be additional phone problems—these are just the most common ones. If you’re having other problems that aren’t listed here, contact Integrity Device Repair, and we’ll come to a solution that works best for you!

FAQs About Phone Problems

Why is my phone not working properly?

Phones often act glitchy because of low storage, outdated software, or too many apps running in the background. A failing battery or overheating can also cause slow performance or random shutdowns. Sometimes the issue is physical damage, like a bad charging port or a cracked internal component. Malware or unreliable apps can also create lag, pop-ups, or network problems. In some cases, the problem is with your carrier or Wi-Fi, not the phone itself.

How do I run a diagnostic on my phone?

iPhones can run basic diagnostics through the Apple Support app or by checking battery health and system settings. Android phones often have built-in diagnostic menus—Samsung uses #0#, while Pixels use the Pixel Diagnostics app. Both platforms also support trusted third-party diagnostic apps that test your screen, sensors, speakers, and more. You can also visit an authorized repair center for a full hardware test. Running diagnostics helps pinpoint whether the issue is software, hardware, or battery-related.

How to test if your phone is working properly?

Start by restarting your phone to clear temporary glitches. Test core functions: touchscreen, speakers, microphone, cameras, vibration, charging port, and physical buttons. Then check connectivity by using Wi-Fi, mobile data, Bluetooth, and making a phone call. Make sure you have enough storage and install any software updates. If the phone overheats, freezes, or certain features fail these tests, a deeper issue may be present.

The post 11 Common Phone Problems and Their Solutions first appeared on Integrity Device Repair.

Understand Your Battery

It’s important to understand how your battery works to know how to extend the battery life of an iPhone or Android device.

Most modern smartphones use lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, which are lightweight, rechargeable, and capable of storing a large amount of energy in a small space.

When you plug in your phone, energy moves into the battery, “filling it up.” When you use your phone, the battery releases that energy to keep everything running.

Every time you charge and use your phone, it goes through that cycle. Over time, the battery holds less energy and lasts less.

Adjust Your Settings

Sometimes, a simple adjustment in your settings can greatly improve your phone battery life. Try these tips and see if they help your phone hold its charge longer.

Screen and Display

One of the biggest and most common ways to deplete your battery is screen brightness. By decreasing the screen brightness or turning on the automatic feature, you can significantly extend your battery’s life. Most phones have a “Night Mode” or “Dark Theme” that doesn’t strain your eyes and can also conserve energy.

Disable Unused Connectivity Features

Features such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and NFC (Near Field Communication, which allows users to make secure transactions, exchange digital content, and connect electronic devices with a touch) can strain battery life when enabled.

Try turning these features off when they’re not being used. Likewise, if data isn’t being used, switch to airplane mode in low-signal areas to save on power.

Battery-Saving Modes

Many smartphones are equipped with a battery saver mode that can help prolong battery life. This feature usually lowers performance and restricts all background activity. It can be turned on when the battery is low, or set to automatically activate when the battery reaches a specific percentage.

Manage Your Apps

Apps take up a lot of storage space and a lot of battery when used. Some apps come pre-installed, and there’s not much you can do about them. Other times, you have a lot of apps installed and running in the background, even if you don’t use them often.

Close or Restrict Apps Running in the Background

A lot of apps are constantly operating in the background. This drains battery life even when they’re not in use. To fix this, go to your phone settings to reduce any background activity for apps that don’t need to be upgraded regularly. For example, apps like social media or news can be limited from refreshing in the background.

Uninstall or Disable Apps You Don’t Use

Apps that you haven’t used for a while can take up real estate. They can also run background processes that drain your battery. Look over your apps regularly and either uninstall or inactivate the ones you don’t use. This saves on battery life and also gives you more storage space.

Check for Battery-Draining Apps

Many smartphones offer a thorough battery usage summary in settings. Look over this to see which apps use the most battery life, and consider other options. If an app is constantly draining battery life, it may be time to uninstall it and download a different one.

Manage Location Services

GPS and location services (Google Maps, Life360, and others) can also drain battery life. Go to location settings and change them to “While Using” instead of “Always” for apps that don’t always need to know where you are. In addition, you can turn off location services altogether for apps that don’t need it.

Reduce Notifications

Notifications from apps can pop up when your phone’s screen is in dark mode, using power and draining the battery. Reduce notifications from apps you don’t need, or group notifications together to minimize interruptions.

Charging Habits

Are your charging habits affecting battery health? They might be! See if you’re accidentally killing your battery.

Avoid Extreme Battery Levels

Keeping your battery at 0% or 100% puts extra strain on its chemistry, reducing the battery’s ability to hold a full charge over time. Staying in the middle range (20–80%) helps it last longer.

Avoid Overnight Charging If Possible

Leaving your phone plugged in all night keeps it at 100% for hours. This prolonged full charge creates heat and accelerates battery wear. Charging in shorter sessions protects the battery’s lifespan.

Use the Right Charger and Cable

It may also be helpful to use the factory charger and cable. Sometimes third-party accessories aren’t as effective, even if they are cheaper.

Don’t Use Your Phone While It’s Charging

Using your phone while it charges generates extra heat. Heat stresses the battery and can cause faster degradation. Letting it charge undisturbed keeps it cooler and healthier.

Don’t Let It Die

The method you use to charge your phone can significantly affect your phone’s long-term battery health. Avoid the habit of allowing the battery to completely drain before plugging it in. Instead, keep it between 20% and 80% for ideal battery strength.

Temperature and Environment

Temperature plays a big role in the health of your phone battery. Keeping your phone in moderate conditions helps maintain battery health so it lasts longer.

Avoid Extreme Heat or Cold

We’ve probably all seen that notification saying our phone is too hot and needs to cool down before we can use it again. Maybe we left it in the summer heat or in a hot car.

High temperatures can damage the battery’s internal components, and cold temperatures can temporarily reduce battery performance. Keep your phone in moderate conditions as much as possible.

Remove Heavy Cases During Charging if Your Phone Heats Up

Thick or heavy cases can trap heat during charging, and as we know, extra heat increases stress on the battery and reduces its lifespan. Removing the case helps the battery stay cool and charge safely.

Store Phones at Moderate Temperatures When Not in Use

Storing your phone in very hot or cold places can weaken the battery over time. Keeping it in a moderate, room-temperature environment preserves its health.

Software Updates and Maintenance

Keeping your phone’s software up to date ensures it runs efficiently and fixes bugs that could drain your battery. Regular maintenance keeps the battery working at its best.

Keep Your Phone Updated

Updating your apps and operating system makes sure that the latest improvements and bug fixes are installed. App creators constantly issue updates that can help with battery life, so updating your apps is very important.

Restart Your Phone Regularly

Background apps and processes can slowly drain the battery. Restarting your phone closes these processes and resets memory, helping your battery last longer between charges.

When It’s Time for a Battery Replacement

Sometimes a battery simply needs to be replaced without replacing the entire phone. Here are a few key signs that your phone needs a new battery:

FAQs About Making Your Phone Battery Last Longer

Does charging overnight ruin my battery?

Not exactly, but it can slightly reduce battery lifespan over time. Modern smartphones stop drawing power once fully charged, but keeping your phone at 100% for hours can create heat and stress the battery. If possible, unplug once it hits full.

Can closing apps really save battery?

Most of the time, no. Smartphones are designed to manage background apps efficiently. Force-closing apps constantly can actually use more battery when you reopen them. Focus on limiting apps that run in the background, such as GPS, social media, or streaming apps.

Why shouldn’t you charge your phone to 100%?

Charging to 100% and keeping it there stresses the battery over time. Lithium-ion batteries last longest when kept between roughly 20% and 80%. Staying in the upper range too long can accelerate wear.

Does repeated charging reduce battery life?

Every battery has a limited number of charge cycles. Frequent full charges (0–100%) contribute more to degradation than topping off in smaller increments. Short, partial charges are gentler on your battery.

Is it bad if I charge my phone every day?

Nope! Daily charging is fine, especially if you top off your battery gradually. Modern batteries are designed for frequent use, and partial daily charges can actually prolong battery lifespan compared to waiting until it’s almost dead.

The post How to Extend the Battery Life of an iPhone & Android first appeared on Integrity Device Repair.
